Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions that are asked of me the most.

How will you vote on issues?

Like everyone else, I have my own opinions and my own set of beliefs.  But unlike politicians who impose their will on the public, I consider myself a public servant and a true representative of the people.  I will always vote for what the majority of the people want and for what is best for Oakland.  I am very approachable and am always willing to talk with citizens.  If I am elected, YOU will always have a voice.

What about a Tax increase?

The current board is looking to raise city property taxes significantly.  The town manager was told to NOT put it in this year's budget though because "it is an election year".  Unless the board gets new people, taxes will absolutely go up next year, about 150%.  I will vote NO to a property tax increase.  The incumbents that are running want to get re-elected and then raise the tax so the public has a year and a half to forget before the next election.  We need new people on the board NOW!  I will vote they way the citizens want!

What about infrastructure?

Our current infrastructure needs improving and it is getting worse day by day.  We are $14M short of the money we need to upgrade our water treatment facility.  Our roads have been neglected for years.  This is what happens when you have unrestrained growth with no plan.  I would like to see a long-term growth plan for Oakland so future development is purposeful and organized.  We should have money allocated in the budget every year for maintenance and continued improvement.  And, yes, we should absolutely do something about the sewage smell in the middle of town!

Did you work for Oakland Parks and Recreation?

No, I was a volunteer on the Oakland Parks and Rec Advisory Board.  I served 4 years as Vice-Chairman.  When my term was over, I asked to not be reappointed.  Instead I opted to let others have a chance at serving.  I was originally appointed by the mayor and voted in by the Board of Aldermen and I enjoyed my time there.

What did you do for the Cypress Creek Bridge restoration?

Being involved in youth sports in Oakland, I am frequently at West Jr High's soccer field or at the Cypress Creek Park.  When I first moved to Oakland the bridge between the two was already boarded up and I was told it was unsafe.  The Oakland BMA had many discussions about the bridge and wanted to tear it down.  I felt it was a better use to the community if it was repaired.  I spoke to one of the Alderman and convinced him to look at the bridge with me.  He agreed that the bridge could be repaired and that repairing it was the best option.  I contacted the local Fayette County Veterans group and they devised a plan that cost the city very little money to repair the bridge.  I, along with my son and other volunteers, helped the Veterans fix the bridge and it was dedicated and reopened in July 2021.

Why do you want to be an Alderman?

I have the leadership skills necessary to move Oakland forward over the next four years and that is what the current administration is seriously lacking.  With the amount of growth that is potentially coming to our community, someone who knows how to balance long term plans with short term necessities is critical.  We need someone who can listen to a variety of opinions and come up with a solution that works best for all.  No more kicking the can down the road or tabling agenda items to the end of never.  We need someone who can make decisions and make the town we live in as nice as we know it can be.  I am the right person at the right time to hold this position.  I also have the temperament to listen to multiple viewpoints and still lead others to a consensus.  Yelling, screaming and intimidation are bully tactics, not leadership.  Vote for Adrian Wiggins, a true leader and let's make Oakland great!
