Oakland Current Topics
Oakland Park
The next phase of the Park is currently under construction. It includes 4 grass soccer fields, a walking path, bathrooms, lighting and concession stand. This phase of the project should be completed this fall and soccer fields should be available for use next spring. The money to fund this phase did come from the $0.005 sales tax and NO PROPERTY TAX dollars were used. We did get a grant from the state to help with funding and we borrowed no money!
Wastewater Treatment Facility
The Wastewater Treatment Facility project is currently ahead of schedule and is only a few months away from being online. The next phase of the project will commence after that and will upgrade our current facility.
Oakland Utility Bill
There are excess funds in our Water Department so Oakland residents will see a $2 per month discount on their water rates. However, a large portion of the loan for the Wastewater Treatment Facility will be due this year and we have to account for depreciation. Customers should expect an increase on the sewage rates. This could be $20-$30 per month. We are currently receiving bids for garbage collection. We are looking to provide better service at a more affordable price.
Property Tax
As a fiscal conservative, I am against any tax increase but on this board, I do not have a vote. The reason for the property tax increase that is proposed is to properly fund our government. For years our town has delayed projects for lack of funding, underpaid employees, and not fully staffed our departments. Our fund balance has gotten insufficiently low. This increase in revenue is what's needed to provide the services our residents expect. As Mayor, I am working diligently to attract new businesses that our residents want to help offset these needed funds. Again, I do not like tax increases! The enhanced sales tax revenues should be enough to compensate for any future property tax increase.
